7 Traits Of A Good Friend

A true friendship is a mutual relationship between two individuals that can survive the test of time and remain unconditional. The general traits of a friendship usually include mutual respect and acceptance, similar interests, and an attachment to each other. Your friends may have many different good qualities, but here are some of the most important qualities every friend should possess in order to qualify as a true friend.

Listens to you

This is one of the most important qualities a good friend should have. A true friend should listen to you with empathy and presence, without interruption. A true friend listens with an open heart and asks questions that indicate that he/she was, in fact, really listening. A true friend cares about your feelings and your needs and would be there always when you need to talk.

Is loyal

Loyalty is undoubtedly the quality that everyone looks for in a friend. Loyalty is an increasingly rare commodity in the world today, but it’s a requirement in every true and long lasting friendship. A loyal friend will be there for you no matter what and you can always count on them. A loyal friend does not gossip about you or talk behind your back.

Is honest

Honesty is another essential quality for friendships. It is really difficult to befriend anyone who tells you lies and can't be trusted. A great friend would be loyal and honest with you and will not break the promises that he/she made to you. If you can trust someone to do the right thing in all situations, you can be sure that they will make a lasting friend.

Is supportive

A good friend is a cheerleader. A good friend is supportive of you and wants you to help you to accomplish your goals. A good friend should encourage you to become the person you want to be and won't try to change who you are. A supportive friend is considerate of your feelings and is happy for your success and accomplishments.

Is dependable

A true friend is a dependable person whom you can trust with your secrets. They will stick with you in good and in bad times and they are the first people you can think of when you're in trouble. Whether they live around the corner or on the other side of the planet, they are the friends that will always be there for you.

Accepts you as you are

True friendship means acceptance. A true friend accepts you as you are and is patient and forgiving when you make mistakes. He/she doesn't judge or condemn and accepts you with all your faults. Each of us has faults, but the challenge of friendship is to distinguish between the faults that need to be accepted and those that need to be overcome.

Gives you space

The best friend respects your privacy and understands that you have family and other friends. A true friend does not cling to you all the time and serves as your confidant and someone you are free around. A true friend is trustworthy and makes you feel comfortable to share your good as well as your bad times with them.

Not all of us have friends that possess these good qualities, but if you are blessed to have someone like that in your life, you should know that you are a very lucky person.
